Old Priorian Cricket Club 2005 - Report
The Old Priorians Cricket Club decided to resurrect itself this year and played three enthralling fixtures that were an absolute delight to all involved. With a healthy mixture of recent leavers (2003/2004) and more mature additions the season started on 10 July 2005 with the annual game against the School 1st XI - always a competitive match. Unfortunately I lost the toss and as is customary the Old Boys batted, much to the displeasure of the senior members of the team who were recovering from the over indulgences of the previous night. We managed to scratch together a respectable score of over 250 with welcome contributions from Adil Abdat, Patrick Fallis and Hugh Jones. This score was considered to be excessive, however with the formidable batting line up of the school I could not take any risks. It soon transpired that this was a high score and the school would not reach the realms of the 200 mark especially once Ned Eckersley was dismissed by Hugh Jones cheaply. The game moved rather slowly towards the inevitable, and despite the efforts of Antony Horan who decided to intimidate the opposition with a peppering of sharp bouncers a draw was unavoidable. We look forward to the school game next year!!
The 2005 season was a resounding success for Old Priorians Cricket primarily due to the fact that we were undefeated. The season concluded with an emphatic victory against Kew Cricket Club, who capitulated to a desperate total of 68 partly due to an impressive bowling contribution from Phil Hopley who took 4 for 15. Indeed 2005 dawned the new beginning for Old Priorians cricket, and as captain it was a pleasure to be able to select from a pool of 18 keen players. Senior players have informed me that this level of response is unprecedented for Old Priorian cricket and everyone in the club is looking forward to the 2006 season as there will also be many recent leavers keen to play.
I would like to thank our exceptional groundsman John for producing some fine wickets this season - we look forward to more of the same next season. I would also like to thank everyone who played this season, and contributed to our exemplary spirit and competitiveness. We will endeavour to maintain our undefeated record next season across possibly eight fixtures, and hopefully a tour.
